Welcome to Fairfield Rugby Club!

Rugby isn’t just a sport. It’s a culture, a life lesson, and a lifetime of connections that will help every player through every life transition. Whether it is moving on to college, needing help with a first child, or getting a first job, rugby is a sport that takes care of its players.

Fairfield Rugby Club offers three youth teams, (U-10, U-12, and U-14), two high school teams (Girls & Boys), two competitive adult teams (Men and Lady Yankees), and a social 'touch' rugby level.

Although rugby is a less known sport in the US, it is actually one of the most popular sports in the world, played by over 5 million people in 120 countries. It is currently the fastest growing team sport in the United States, with a current estimate of 1.2 million rugby players.  Comparing these statistics to other popular field sports, one can easily see the differences. Lacrosse has a current estimate of 800,000 players in the US and is not a popular international sport. Football participation numbers are plummeting, with a current estimate of about 1.1 million players. In addition, unlike Lacrosse and Football, Rugby is an Olympic sport. Boys, girls, men, and women play rugby across the world.

On a warm Sunday afternoon, you can see the joy on all of the players’ faces. Rugby is really fun. It doesn’t have the intensity and pressure of other youth sports. Parents aren’t shouting from the sidelines, criticizing their children, the referees, or the other team’s players. Instead, you will see each team cheering on the other, complimenting a good decision, a good play, or good sportsmanship. The older generation of players will watch the youth players after they wrap up their own game, smiling and cheering on the newest generation of rugby players. Congeniality is a natural expected consequence of this game, which is why rugby is known as the "gentleman's sport".

One of the best parts of rugby is that there is truly a position for every player. In youth sports, a child’s size or body type can easily determine whether a particular sport will be an option for that youth player. If you are too small, you are likely to struggle in football. If you are too short, you will have to work a lot harder to secure a spot on a basketball team. If you aren’t very athletic, you may never find a sport. But not in rugby. In rugby, everyone plays. Everyone gets the ball. Everyone runs. All sizes are needed for various positions on the field. Every player respects all positions on the field since no one position is more important than another. Building self-confidence and personal success is inevitable in rugby.

The Fairfield Rugby Club’s (FRC) growth and success serves as a model for other teams across this state and country. Since being founded in 2009, the club can proudly announce that in 2016, the FRC Yankees Mens Team Won the Division 3 National Rugby Championship. In addition, the Yankees Mens Team won the Empire GU Championship in 2016 and 2017. The FRC High School Rugby Team won the Connecticut state championship for two consecutive years in 2015 & 2016. In the 2015-16 season, the FRC High School team was ranked as the #7 best high school rugby program in the country. One of the greatest individual successes in the club is one of the high school players representing the United States on the United States Junior Olympic Team.
